It has been a slow Transfer Portal for Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young. There was an exodus out of Blacksburg in the portal this season, one year after he got a ton of retention last year. Some key players are going out the door for new homes next season, while Young was able to get some key retention.
Forwards Amani Hansberry and Tyler Johnson are returning next season, as is point guard Ben Hammond. Also coming back is assistant coach Chester Frazier. To replace some of the outgoing talent, the Hokies have picked up a pair of commitments in the portal: Oklahoma's Kuol Atak and San Diego State's Miles Heide. Both are front-court players who add depth.
There are still multiple needs the Hokies and Young still have, incuding a guard in the backcourt. On Saturday, they picked up a commitment from Florida Atlantic transfer Isaiah Elohim.

Florida Atlantic transfer Isaiah Elohim commits to Virginia Tech
Elohim was the 51st overall player according to 247Sports Composite Rankings in the Class of 2024 and played his freshman year at USC before transferring to the Owls. This past season, he had a breakout season, averaging 12.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1 assist per game. He shot 46.5% from the field and 36.8 from behind the arc. He started all 32 games for FAU in 2025-26 and averaged 28.1 minutes a game. At 6-foot-5, the Chatsworth, California native adds some scoring and, more importantly, length at the guard position with Hammond.
The roster is slowly coming into focus for Virginia Tech next season, and again, there are some key players who are coming back, and the pieces filling in around them are going to be key contributors. There is still work for Young to do, but he certainly is off to a good start rebuilding the roster.
