After making the NCAA Tournament after missing it last season as the first team out under Megan Duffy, the Virginia Tech women's basketball team had a tough draw in the first round in Austin, Texas. Matched up with Oregon in the dreaded 8-9 game, the Hokies were eliminated, 70-60, ending the season in the Fort Worth Regional 3.

After the game, Duffy said that she's going to fix the things that didn't go well. She does have a handful of good players who can return for another season in Blacksburg. However, in this day and age of college sports, that's not always a given.

“This is a different time in college basketball. You have no guarantees the next year what your roster is going to look like, who’s going to be back,'' said Duffy. "I think we’ve got the right people in the room in the locker room. We’ve got the right leaders.

“We’re going to take the positive things that happened and keep that momentum, and then — I’ll guarantee you something from me — I’m going to try everything I can to fix the things that didn’t go well.”

If Duffy does fix things, she'll do it minus at least one player.

Virginia Tech women's basketball forward Kayl Petersen will enter the Transfer Portal

Sophomore forward Kayl Petersen, who just completed he second season in Blacksburg after following Duffy from Wisconsin, announced on her X account on Thursday morning that she's going to enter the Transfer Portal with two years of eligibility remaining.

This season, Petersen averaged 3.2 points and 2.9 rebounds a game for the Hokies. She scored in double figures twice in 2025-26. She had 17 points and 11 rebounds in a season-opening win over Towson, then she had 10 points and nine rebounds in a win over Loyola of Maryland. She didn't get as much playing time as she would have liked and will look to get more at her next stop next season.
