After a pair of losses last week to North Carolina State and Notre Dame, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team held off a scrappy SMU squad on Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum. It was a win against a team that lost a ton of scoring production from last season and was missing three players from this year’s team with injuries.
For the last couple of weeks, Megan Duffy’s team has been on the bubble when it comes to the NCAA Tournament in Charlie Creme’s bracketology at ESPN. After losses to the Wolfpack and Irish, Creme had the Hokies on the bubble as part of the last four in. The win over the Mustangs kept them in the last four in, but had them rising to the top line of that group and inching closer to being safely into the field.
Virginia Tech women remain on NCAA Tournament bubble
In Creme’s latest bracketology released on Tuesday, Virginia Tech remained on the bubble in the last four in, but they are now in the top of the four teams in that group. This week the Hokies get Syracuse at home on Thursday night and then have a trip up to Charlottesville on Sunday for a rematch with Virginia, which won the first matchup last month in Blacksburg.
If there is one thing that is currently in Virginia Tech's favor, it's that they don't have any "bad losses'' on their résumé at the moment. Now, that could change, but considering the schedule that's in front of them, they have a chance to pick up some key wins against North Carolina and California.
If they can secure 20 wins before the ACC Tournament, which is very doable, then it will only strengthen their case for the NCCA tourney as the ACC is loaded and one or two wins in the conference tourney will also help.
