It has been well noted, even before the 2025 season began, that this is a big one for the Virginia Tech football team in terms of the future and the direction of the program. Brent Pry begins Year 4 of his tenure in Blacksburg, and it didn't get off to the start that everyone was hoping for last weekend in Atlanta against South Carolina in the Aflac Kickoff Game.
A 24-11 loss to the 10th-ranked Gamecocks in a game that was there for the taking for a good part of it, but common mistakes from poor clock management, penalties, and mistakes all allowed South Carolina to break open the game in the fourth quarter with a pair of touchdowns for the win. That loss puts all the more pressure on the Hokies entering their home opener on Saturday night at Lane Stadium against Vanderbilt. A must-win in Week 2 is less than ideal, but on College GameDay, Kirk Herbstreit threw some shade at the program, and really, he wasn't wrong.
Kirk Herbstreit throws a truth bomb about the current state of the Virginia Tech program
While this isn't going to be a matchup that is going to garner a ton of national attention, it certainly is big enough for College GameDay to talk about it, and well, Herbstreit didn't hold back when discussing where the Hokeis program is at.
"When Corey Moore and Michael Vick were there, it was awesome because they won the games,'' said Herbstreit. "But there hasn’t been anything. The highlight of a home game is the entrance. That's gotta change.''
Sadly, he's not wrong. It's a huge truth bomb about where things are now. The program feels like it's in a dire spot, a place that it has been in since the Frank Beamer days. College football needs Virginia Tech to be the Virginia Tech program under the Michael Vick days. Virginia Tech fans need the program to be the program it was with Michael Vick. It hurts to hear, but the truth is, Herbstreit is right with what he said.
