James Franklin will have to wait to learn if 4-star Penn State commit is flipping to VT

James Franklin's arrival at Virginia Tech has already made a difference for the Hokies in recruiting.

Last week, Franklin had a host of blue-chip prospects, many of whom were previously committed to Penn State, on campus to watch Virginia Tech take on Miami. The result of that weekend helped the Hokies receive a commitment from four-star Messiah Mickens to kickstart the Franklin era.

But there's a long way to go for Virginia Tech's roster to at the level Franklin wants. And that means he's continuing to aggressively recruit with the Early Signing Period a week away. Another big target for the Hokies is four-star safety Matt Seig, but the Penn State commit is going to wait until next week to make his final decision.

Seig gets his first look at Virginia Tech

The four-star prospect from Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, has been committed to Penn State for over a year and remains pledged to the Nittany Lions. But Sieg's strong relationship with Franklin led him to take an official visit to Virginia Tech with an open mind.

Sieg ended up being impressed with the school and the amenities that were there for the student-athletes. He also enjoyed the gameday atmosphere and gave credit to the Hokies students and fans for showing up and being loud despite going through a disappointing season.

"I thought the game day atmosphere was great. What's impressive about that is they're 3-8. I can't even imagine what it will be like when they get rolling."

Seig will make his final choice between the Hokies, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Indiana and Notre Dame. He has taken official visits to all five schools.

What's next for Virginia Tech's recruiting class?

Franklin is going to keep rolling with this class. Right now, the Hokies have nine commitments, and I'm sure Franklin would like to try to double that number before the end of the Early Signing Period.

This final weekend is another chance for Franklin to make a splash, and he's hoping that bringing four-star wide receiver Davion Brown onto campus will lead to another commitment. Brown, a blue-chip prospect from Richmond, was a Penn State commit, but backed away from that pledge when Franklin was fired. Now he has a chance to reunite with the coach he originally committed to.
