The month of December has been a busy one for Virginia Tech football coach James Franklin. After Early Signing Day at the beginning of the month, the former Penn State coach has been busy putting together his first staff in Blacksburg.

In what was a rather surprising move, Franklin is bringing back Brent Pry, yes, the same Brent Pry that was fired by Virginia Tech in September, to be his defensive coordinator, a role he held at Penn State under Franklin.

Some former Penn State assistants have joined Franklin in Blacksburg, including quarterbacks coach Danny O'Brien. Franklin has also dipped into the coaching staff at other schools to grab running backs coach Norval McKenzie from Georgia Tech and defensive line coach Sean Spencer from Texas A&M. On Monday, he hired his special teams coach when it was reported that he was going to hire Doug Shearer from UConn.

According to Evan Watkins of VTScoop, Franklin is going to add Shearer to his staff. He recently worked under Jim Mora in Storrs, but Mora left earlier this month to become the head coach at Colorado State. Shearer had the Huskies special teams as one of the best in the country.

He comes to Virginia Tech with a good amount of experience, with stops at Miami of Ohio and North Carolina State before UConn. Everywhere he has been, the special teams groups have been very productive, and he'll be going to a Virginia Tech program that has been one of the top special teams units under Frank Beamer. Franklin's staff is beginning to come together with the Transfer Portal opening later this week.
