Saturday was a rough day for Virginia Tech football coach James Franklin in terms of recruiting. He lost out on a pair of recruits, one to Tennessee and another to Georgia Tech. The loss to the Yellow Jackets was a tough in terms of losing out on a player of need, at linebacker.
Franklin, Brent Pry and the Hokies don't have a linebacker commited at the position in the Class of 2027, which is kind of surprising given all the commits they have already in the class. However, that's what made three-star linebacker Noah Renes from Florida a priority. In the end, he choose Brent Key and the Yellow Jackets.
Late on Saturday night, Virginia Tech picked up a Crystal Ball prediction from 247Sports to flip a Notre Dame linebacker, which would be a big move for Franklin and Pry.
Virginia Tech picks up Crystal Ball prediction to flip Notre Dame Class of 2027 commit
Evan Watkins of VTScoop logged a prediction for the Hokies to flip Notre Dame commit Amarri Irvin from IMG Academy in Florida. Irvin has been committed to the Irish since Nov. 26, 2025, but it appears that Franklin, Pry and Virginia Tech are pushing the envelope to flip Irvin's commitment.
However, despite the Crystal Ball prediction for Virginia Tech, Texas is also reportedly in the mix. Irvin was not part of the Hokies weekend visitors this weekend in Blacksburg, but he took a visit prior to this weekend and a second Crystal Ball prediction for the Hokies was logged by Brian Dohn of 247Sports.
Again, Irvin is committed still to Notre Dame, but there is some thought that he might be de-committing and part ways with the Irish. If that happens, which likely would be sooner rather than later, then the Hokies are in a prime spot to complete a flip. Which Hokies fans thought that the day would come when Virginia Tech would flip a Notre Dame commit? The James Franklin effect.
