Last March, Kenny Brooks left Virginia Tech to become the new women’s basketball coach at Kentucky. Joining in Lexington was point guard Georgia Amoore and center Clara Strack. Add in the graduations of Elizabeth Kitley and Cayla King, and a giant and successful run in Blacksburg was over just like that.

Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock hired former Marquette coach Megan Duffy to replace Brooks and a new era of women’s basketball will officially begin Monday night when the Hokies host UNC Wilmington at Cassell Coliseum.

As for the Virginia Tech men, they underwent a massive roster overhaul following last season and have to build their roster for this season through the transfer portal. They already have suffered a huge loss having to dismiss Temple transfer Hysier Miller. With a lot of new faces and some incoming freshmen joining the program, it's going to be vital that they jell early in the season. With the regular season openers for both teams finally here, this is a guide to watch opening night.

Duffy and the women will play first at Cassell Coliseum hosting UNC Wilmington beginning at 5 p.m. and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra. The men will follow, also on ACC Network Extra when they play Delaware State at 8 p.m.

Both teams have a ton of questions that need to be answered over the next month ahead of ACC play beginning in December before kicking into full gear at the New Year. Both teams were picked in the bottom half of conference play a month ago and going in with not many expectations might be good and teams may take them lightly. Regardless, the next month will be worth watching as both teams look to finish above expectations in 2024-25.
