The ACC officially welcomed SMU, Stanford, and California into the conference this season. Talk about creating travel nightmares. The ACC isn’t alone after the PAC-12 broke up last season with Oregon and Washington joining the Big Ten. One good thing about the conference realignment is when basketball teams make the trip west or when Stanford or Cal come east, they spend a couple of days in that part of the country and play two games. That is the case this week for the Hokies this week out west.
The Hokies will join in-state rival Virginia in California this week. They will open a two-game road trip on Wednesday night at Stanford in Northern California. According to their X account, Mike Young and his team boarded a plane and headed west on Monday after the storm that cleared the Blacksburg area.
How to watch Virginia Tech at Stanford men’s basketball
The Hokies will be coming into the game off a huge comeback win over Miami, 86-85, on Saturday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum. Stanford lost their last game on Saturday at Pittsburgh, which is off to a strong start in 2024-25.

It can’t be stated how big of a win it was for the Hokies over the Hurricanes. They showed a lot of fight against a program going through a transition with a new coach after Jim Larranaga stepped down on Dec. 26. Freshman guard Ben Hammond is settling into the point guard position and they were able to knock down some big shots to set up Mylyjael Poteat’s three-point play with 2.7 seconds left to be the winning points. Getting a split out west would be a successful trip for Virginia Tech, although it won’t be easy.
