Last week was the most successful season for the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team in 2024-25. In a frustrating season, it was a win-win week for Mike Young and his team with a pair of conference road games.

The Hokies began the week with a win at Florida State that was career win No. 400 for Young. Virginia Tech built a 20-point halftime lead and then held off a late Seminoles charge for the milestone victory. On Saturday, the Hokies picked up their most impressive win of the season at Virginia in the Commonwealth Clash, 75-74, when they survived a last-second shot from the Cavaliers.

Now they return home for one game this week before heading back on the road on Saturday, but their one game this week at home will be a tough one against first-year ACC member SMU.

How to watch SMU at Virginia Tech men’s basketball game

The Mustangs are going to be a difficult opponent for Virginia Tech. SMU is not only fighting for a double-bye in the ACC Tournament next month, but also they are on the NCAA Tournament bubble and a loss in Blacksburg is the last thing they can afford right now.

Date: Wednesday, Feb. 5
Time: 9:00 p.m.
Venue: Cassell Coliseum
How to Watch: ACC Network, ESPN.com, ESPN+, or FuboTV
Virginia Tech Record: 10-12 (5-6 ACC)
SMU Record: 17-5 (8-3 ACC)

Boopie Miller is one of the more exciting players in the ACC this season, and he has hit some big shots to win games. Virginia Tech will need to come up with a game plan for the Mustangs and Miller.

On the flip side, the Hokies offensively have been moving the ball well in their last two games with Tobi Lawal and Jaden Schutt leading the way. Freshman point guard Ben Hammond has made some big shots as has Jaden Young. Tyler Johnson has been big on both ends of the floor as well.

Prediction: SMU 71, Virginia Tech 66
