On Saturday night, the annual Commonwealth Cup will be fought for in Charlottesville when Virginia Tech makes the trip to Virginia. One year ago, there was a lot at stake as both teams entered the game at 5-6, and a trip to a bowl game was on the line. When the dust settled, the Hokies came away with a 37-17 rout of the Cavaliers to earn a trip to the Duke's Mayo Bowl against Minnesota.
This season is a different story. Virginia Tech enters 3-8 and with an interim coach, Philip Montgomery, after Brent Pry was fired after a Week 3 loss to Old Dominion at home. On the flip side, Virginia comes into the game with a lot at stake. A win and the Cavaliers are headed to the ACC Championship Game next weekend in Charlotte. A loss, and they are likely still headed to a big bowl game. With so much at stake between a 9-2 and a 3-8 team, what could possibly go wrong?

Virginia Tech vs. Virginia: History
Ok, so by now you know the domination that Virginia Tech has had in the series. It's not fair. The Hokies will enter the game with 68 wins in the all-time series to 38 losses and five ties. Since 1999, Virginia has had just two wins in the series in 25 matchups. Virginia's last win came in 2019, 39-30, at home. If they don't win this matchup, and with James Franklin coming on board at Virginia Tech, it's hard to envision them winning another game anytime soon.
