When the Washington Commanders drafted former Virginia Tech wide receiver Jaylin Lane on Day 3 of the NFL Draft back in April, it was considered a steal at the time of the selection.
Washington was excited that the wide receiver was there, but there was a part of his game that the Commanders liked, his ability to return punts. Last season for the Hokies, he took over those duties when Tucker Holloway was lost in spring practices in 2024 because of an injury and let's just say that Lane took full advantage of the opportunity.
Lane returned a punt in a Week 2 win over Marshall last September and after having a good training camp with Washington this year, he has been returning punts through the first three weeks for Washington. Against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, he had an electric return of a punt to the house.

Leading Las Vegas 20-10 at home in the third quarter, Lane went back to field a punt at the Commanders' 10-yard line and he made some nice moves, avoid some tackles and outraced the Raiders kick coverage 90 yards for a touchdown for a 27-10 Washington lead.

Anybody who been following Virginia Tech or the Washington Commanders should not be surprised that Lane was able to take it to the house. It was only a matter of time. His speed is certainly NFL speed when he gets in the open field and that was on display last season even when he was at wide receiver for the Hokies. He has been targeted early in the season at wide receiver, but his biggest impact early in the season has been on special teams and it wouldn't be surprising to see him take another back for a touchdown at some point this year.
