After completing his first season at Virginia Tech following the 2024-25 season, VCU transfer Tobi Lawal announced that he was to go through the NBA Draft process at the Combine last May. He left the door open to return to Blacksburg if he didn't declare for the NBA Draft.

In the end, he returned to Virginia Tech and played out his senior season on a team that was expected to be an NCAA Tournament team. They fell short of that goal and declined to play in the NIT, thus ending Lawal's career as a Hokie after a first-round elimination at the hands of Wake Forest in overtime in the ACC Tournament.

For the second straight year this week, Lawal is taking part in the NBA Draft Combine, looking to hear his name called potentially late in the second round of this June's Draft. Some mock drafts have him as a late-round pick for some teams. If he is going to get selected, then he certainly is making the case with an insane test result at the Combine.

Lawal had a standing vertical of 45.5", which certainly opened some eyes. It remains to be seen what teams think of Lawal. Is he someone who could come in and make a huge impact right away? Unlikely, but he certainly is worth someone taking a chance on him and stashing him in the G League to get some professional experience. He has some parts of his game that need some work, but his athletic ability is off the charts and certainly something that teams might consider when discussing him late in the second round.

When Lawal went through the Draft Combine last season, he learned a lot and worked on some things at Virginia Tech. He was the Hokies' best player, and his absence during the season was felt in games this lost where a different result would have likely led to an NCAA Tournament berth in March.

Lawal's ability and talent are still raw, but certainly worth someone taking a chance on him and working with him. In the right organization, someone could find a diamond in the rough. Certainly someone who will draw interest the closer the draft gets next month. It will be interesting to see where he lands on some mock drafts following this combine.
