Last month, the NCAA granted waivers to former JUCO players in the wake of Diego Pavia getting another season at Vanderbilt. That was big for Virginia Tech linebacker Sam Brumfield.
After that ruling, Brumfield gained one more year of eligibility and he announced that he was entering the transfer portal for next season. A good linebacker for his 5-foot-11, 225-pound frame, he found a new home for next season with a rising AAC program.
Sam Brumfield commits to Memphis
On Saturday night, Brumfield announced on his X account that he has committed to Memphis in the AAC, a program that won 10 games in 2023 and 11 games this past season. He will bring veteran leadership to their linebacking room.
He played in all 12 regular season games for the Hokies this season with 60 tackles, which was a drop from his previous season with Middle Tennessee State where he had 82 in 2023. He had 1.5 sacks and a key fumble recovery against Miami back in September. Three times he finished with a season-high for tackles in a game with seven against Vanderbilt, Stanford, and Georgia Tech.
As far as Virginia Tech goes, they have some young linebackers returning next season with Caleb Woodson and Jaden Keller leading the group after they posted strong 2024 seasons and were at the top of the Hokies tackling numbers. Brumfield, a Mississippi native, saw the writing on the wall after this season and you have to think the firing of Chris Marve had a lot to do with his decision to transfer as well.
