Transfer portal activity is picking up and more and more players are making commitments and setting visits. So far, it has been quiet on the portal front for the Virginia Tech men, who have lost a half-dozen players to the portal and have so far only added one in West Virginia transfer Amani Hansberry.
It is only a matter of time that Mike Young gets some more portal commits with what is expected to be a bigger NIL package, and it’s only a matter of time before some of the Hokies in the portal commit. A former Virginia Tech guard has entered the portal for a second time in two years, and he is becoming a highly regarded player who has set up a pair of visits to one SEC program and a Big East program.
Former Virginia Tech guard Rodney Rice sets up two portal visits
In October 2023, before the Hokies began the 2023-24 season, former guard Rodney Rice made the surprising decision to enter the transfer portal. That left the Hokies shorthanded at the point guard position and was a rather big loss. After entering the transfer portal last spring, he ended up committing to the University of Maryland.
This season, Rice averaged 13.8 points a game, 2.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 31 minutes a night for the Terrapins. He shot 43% from the field for former coach Kevin Willard, who left after Maryland’s elimination from the NCAA Tournament to take over at Villanova. Now, Rice could be following his former coach to the Big East.

Rice has set up a visit to Villanova on Thursday and Friday this Thursday and Friday, then he will head to the University of Tennessee for a visit over the weekend. Being able to play well both on the ball and off of it, Rice is one of the sought-after guards this portal cycle for some of the top programs in the country.
