When Virginia Tech hired Megan Duffy to replace Kenny Brooks as the women's basketball coach, she hit the ground running in recruiting. Like James Franklin did in football when he went to Penn State routes to land some commitments from high school recruits, Duffy did the same thing.

While at Marquette, Duffy picked up a commitment from one of the top in-state players in the Class of 2024, Kayl Petersen. She was the 68th-ranked player in her class by ESPN's HoopGurlz 100, and she had a dominating senior season in high school.

She averaged 17.7 points, 12.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.3 blocks, and 2.0 steals a game. She grew up an hour away from Marquette's campus, but was heavily committed to Duffy. It shouldn't have been surprising that she followed her to Blacksburg from Wisconsin. After two years with the Hokies, Petersen hit the Transfer Portal last month and committed on Friday morning.

This past season saw a drop in Petersen's stats across the board. In 32 games, she averaged 10.7 minutes, five fewer minutes than a year ago, 2.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and shot 35.7% from the field and 86% from the free throw line. In 64 career games at Virginia Tech, she averaged 13.2 minutes a game, 3.2 points, and 2.9 rebounds. She had three points and three rebounds in the Hokies' NCAA Tournament loss to Oregon last month in 15 minutes. A week after the game, it was announced that she was leaving through the portal.

You can't blame someone for wanting to leave and go home. Petersen did a good job in her role for Duffy and Virginia Tech, but it wasn't surprising to see her move on.
