There was a time when the Virginia Tech football team was mentioned in a handful of games before the season that would be the biggest ACC games during certain weeks of the season. However, over time, they were becoming less and less mentioned in those games.
It was fun each year when Hokies fans would look and see which games some thought would be the biggest games during the course of a 12-game schedule. That hasn't been the case in recent seasons. However, after Virginia Tech hired James Franklin last fall, they immediately became a national headline again, something the program was lacking under Justin Fuente and Brent Pry.

Franklin's first season in Blacksburg will not be an easy one in terms of ACC games, and this year, the Hokies will be playing a nine-game conference slate with some big road games. Steve Lassan of Athlon Sports predicted the best game each week in the ACC, and the Hokies were mentioned twice.

A quick look at the Hokies 2026 schedule, there are three road games on the backend that are going to be the three most difficult. Oct. 24 at Clemson, Nov. 6 at SMU, and Nov. 21 at Miami. What a schedule that is. However, Lassan listed two games that will be the biggest games of those weekends in 2026.
His first game for Virginia Tech is at Clemson in late October. How things go for both teams leading into that game will determine just how big of a game it is, but if both teams can take care of business with their schedules, then this could be a real juicy matchup. The second game is the Commonwealth Clash against Virginia. Last season, the Cavaliers picked up a win over one of the worst Hokies teams in decades, 27-7. It is time for Franklin to restore order in the series after Virginia picked up a rare win.
Some other Virginia Tech games could have made this list; the matchup at SMU comes to mind, but just having the Hokies mentioned twice is another signal that Virginia Tech is quickly coming back.
