ESPN women's Top 25 reveals daunting task ahead of Virginia Tech women's basketball
By Scott Roche
Before accepting the women’s basketball position at Virginia Tech, Megan Duffy knew how tough the ACC was going to be. It’s one of, if not the top, college basketball conferences for women, and generally, every game is going to be a battle with no easy wins. That will once again be the case in 2024-25 for the Hokies.
ACC has 6 women’s team ranked in ESPN way-too-early Top 25
ESPN released their way-too-early Top 25 for the upcoming season and the ACC had six teams ranked. Notre Dame led the way at No. 6, followed by North Carolina State (No.9), Duke (No. 10), North Carolina (No. 13), Louisville (No. 17), and Florida State (No. 19).
Last season, Virginia Tech beat NC State, UNC, and Louisville on the road while losing at FSU and Duke. However, the 2024-25 version of the Hokies is going to be a lot different looking than the 2023-24 Hokies. Kenny Brooks left for Kentucky and brought Georgia Amoore and Clara Strack with him and they come in at No. 23 in ESPN’s ranking.
Just what the ceiling is for Virginia Tech this season remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure, it’s going to be a difficult road against a lot of good teams. Duffy getting the team to come together early in the season is going to be key in the non-conference schedule before ACC play begins.
Matilda Ekh, Carleigh Wenzel, and Rose Micheaux headline the returning players for Duffy, and protecting the home court at Cassell Coliseum is going to be necessary if Virginia Tech is going to succeed. The best way to go into conference play is to have a good November in the non-conference to build momentum and the schedule is there for them to achieve that, now they have to go out and do it.
