At the halfway point of the 2025 season, the Virginia Tech football team sits at 2-4. There have been numerous changes for the Hokies with Brent Pry fired, some players entering the Transfer Portal following his dismissal, as well as injuries catching up with interim coach Philip Montgomery.
After back-to-back wins over Wofford and North Carolina State, Virginia Tech dropped a 30-23 decision to Wake Forest at home on Saturday. With so many questions and a tough remaining schedule, which includes a pair of byes, the Hokies are on a path to missing a bowl game for the first time in three years after two straight 6-6 seasons.
Virginia Tech kicks off the second half of its schedule at Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon as a two-touchdown underdog, which is not surprising. ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI) doesn't paint a promising picture for the rest of the season for the Hokies in terms of wins.
ESPN paints a dreary picture for the rest of the 2025 Virginia Tech football season
Virginia Tech has six ACC games remaining, and ESPN doesn't have a very promising outlook for the second half of the season, which should come as no surprise. Here are the Hokies' odds pre the FPI in terms of wins,
- at Georgia Tech: 20.2%
- vs. California: 74.2%
- vs. Louisville: 32.2%
- at Florida State: 14.9%
- vs. Miami: 11.1%
- at Virginia: 18.2%
Based on those percentages, the Hokies are going to finish 3-9, with a win over California being their only win. That right now even seems like a stretch, but hey, when a team has to fly cross-country, anything is possible. Who thought Virginia Tech was going to Raleigh and beat NC State?
Currently, four of the remaining six opponents are ranked in the latest Associated Press Top 25, with Cal and Louisville being the only two not ranked. There is no doubt that it is going to be a tough final six games for Montgomery and the Hokies.
