Shortly after her career came to an end officially last spring at Virginia Tech, the school announced that they were going to do the right thing and retire Elizabeth Kitley's No. 33 to the rafters at Cassell Coliseum. On Wednesday, it was announced and to no one's surprise, the ACC game against Louisville has been sold out to support Kitley.
The greatest player to wear the Virginia Tech uniform in women's basketball will have her number hanging inside the arena where she helped to put Hokies basketball on the map. When she came to Blacksburg, few envisioned what would end up happening where she would hold several records and lead her team to the Final Four as well as winning the ACC regular season championship in 2023-24.
Unfortunately, her career came to a heartbreaking end when she tore her ACL in the Hokies regular season final at Virginia last March. Former head coach Kenny Brooks ruled her out of the ACC Tournament and then the NCAA Tournament after Virginia Tech was awarded a host site for the first and second round of March Madness.
The good news is that Kitley is back on the court recovering from the injury and surgery as she prepares for the 2025 WNBA season. Despite her injury, she was drafted by the Las Vegas Aces and will look to play in her first full season this summer. After it was announced that the game was sold out, Kitley took to social media
It's not surprising that Kitley thanked the fans and if there was any question whatsoever as to whether or not this game would be sold out, they haven't been paying attention. Kitley was part of a run that Blacksburg on the map and fans will always support women's basketball and this is just the latest example.
