We are just a few weeks away from NFL training camps getting underway. As far as some former Virginia Tech players go, they will be some looking to get more playing time and make a bigger impact in 2026.
One player who made an impact in 2025 was Jaylin Lane with the Washington Commanders as both a punt returner and wide receiver. However, things ended frustratingly for the Commanders in 2025, and they are looking to reload on the offensive side of the ball for quarterback Jayden Daniels. Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports played matchmaker for some remaining free agents. He predicted one wide receiver to land in Washington.
Commanders predicted to land free agent wide receiver Stefon Diggs
If Washington is going to land a top receiver in free agency, that remains, Stefon Diggs is predicted to land in the Nation's Capital.
"Instead of waiting for Brandon Aiyuk to potentially become available, the Commanders would be better off signing Diggs, who showed during his lone season in New England that he is still capable of producing at a relatively high level,'' wrote DeArdo. "Diggs, who is from the D.C. area, would join a Washington receiving corps that includes two-time Pro Bowler Terry McLaurin and rookie Antonio Williams. Diggs' presence would surely make life easier for Jayden Daniels, who is hoping to return to form after an injury-plagued 2025 season.''
Last season for the New England Patriots, Diggs caught 85 passes from quarterback Drake Maye for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns, while averaging 11.9 yards per catch. He played a big part in the Patriots' run to the Super Bowl against the Seattle Seahawks.
As for Lane, in his first season as a pro, he had 16 receptions for 225 yards, which came out to a 14.1 average per catch. He had 314 yards in punt returns with two touchdowns, which is where Washington was hoping he would make the biggest impact. That ended up being the case, and if a player like Diggs is signed, that'll give him more time to concentrate on returning kicks and making a bigger impact in 2026.
