The Virginia Tech football season has been over for 16 days. Truth be told, the season was over before their 27-7 season-ending loss to Virginia in Charlottesville, but a frustrating season finished at 3-9.
It was a tumultuous season that started 0-3, and Brent Pry was fired after a Week 3 loss at home to Old Dominion, 45-26. You have to give credit where credit is due with Philip Montgomery, who was hired as the Hokies' offensive coordinator last winter, but assumed the head coaching duties for the final nine games after Pry was fired.
Montgomery and the rest of the staff may have finished the season 3-6, but Virginia Tech looked like a prepared team that never quit on the season. James Franklin was hired in mid-November, and the future of the program is bright. However, the 2025 season will be one that will not be forgotten for a while.
Virginia Tech gets expected 2025 season grade from CBS Sports
Chip Patterson of CBS Sports graded out all 17 ACC football teams season. When it came to Virginia Tech, there was no beating around the bush. Here is what Patterson wrote and the Hokies' grade.
"No one had specifically penciled Virginia Tech in as an ACC title contender, but the Hokies were expected to be a solid bowl team and one of the better squads of the Brent Pry era. After an 0-3 start that saw Virginia Tech lose by an average of 18.7 points per game, the school decided to fire Pry, and while there were a couple of good highlights showcasing the players' resiliency (wins at NC State and in overtime against Cal), this was not a successful season by any measure. The future looks bright with James Franklin taking over, but the final grade for 2025 is not a passing one." Grade: F
Patterson is right that this has not been a successful season by any measure for Virginia Tech, but the future is bright under Franklin. As for the 2025 Hokies, to say that Virginia Tech was supposed "to be a solid bowl team" is a little much, given the roster and the flaws it had after a mass Transfer Portal exodus following the 2024 campaign. Still, 3-9 is not what many fans saw coming, but there is nothing to do now but enjoy what is expected to be a program that improves quickly under Franklin's leadership, and it's time to turn the page on 2025.
