Coming off their first loss of the season, James Franklin and the Virginia Tech football team must head west to California to play the Golden Bears. Not only are the Hokies dealing with injuries, but questions are surrrounding just exactly who they'll be facing under center this weekend against California, and now questions are surrounding the future of quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer.
On the latest Cover 3 Podcast, Andrew Ivins and Bud Elliott discussed which quarterbacks could hit the Transfer Portal this upcoming offseason, and Elliot immediately went to Grunkemeyer and even projected a perfect fit for him.
Bud Elliott suggests Ethan Grunkmeyer could land at Georgia in the Transfer Portal
Welcome to the current state of college athletics. National analyst's guessing where some of the nations top players will end up at the halfway point of the current season in 2027. That brings us to Elliott and Ivins. On the latest Cover 3 Podcast, the duo discussed where some of the signal callers who could hit the portal could end up, and Elliott thinks he's a good fit for Kirby Smart at Georgia.
"I think Grunkemeyer is really good,'' said Elliott. "I think the Hokies will find a way to hold onto him. I think of accurate, hits guys on the run, a lot of YAC, knows where to go with the ball; that sounds a lot like what Georgia demands. Think of the fit for what they do offensively; I think he's really good.''
Again, it needs to be pointed out that Elliott thinks Virginia Tech and Franklin will find a way to hold onto him, but man, this is the last thing that Virginia Tech needs right now. Of course, once this hit social media and Hokies fans called out Elliott, he went into defensive mode and got a little testy when called out, but I'm not sure what he expected.
Elliott is right in terms of Grunkemeyer being a really good quarterback, and normally this would cause some concern for Virginia Tech fans, but the school and athletic department are pumping money and resources into not only football, but athletics as a whole. Could Grunkemeyer leave? Of course, anyone can, but if he does and things fall off the rails the rest of this season, you know where the finger will be pointed. It might seem like an odd time for this to come out, but nothing should surprise anyone in the current state of college football and athletics.
