After former Virginia Tech women's basketball coach Kenny Brooks left for the University of Kentucky, there were questions surrounding what the future held for some of the young players for the Hokies. After the school hired Megan Duffy from Marquette, some players decided to remain in Blacksburg, including guard Carliegh Wenzel.
It was big when she announced that she was returning to Virginia Tech and it has been a decision that has been big for the program. She has been very good all season for a team that has used balanced scoring to win a lot of games. In the second round of the ACC Tournament on Thursday night against an undermanned, but scrappy Georgia Tech team, she scored a team-high 15 points as the Hokies rebounded from a dreadful start to pick up a 62-54 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
That win moved Virginia Tech into the quarterfinals on Friday night against North Carolina. After the win over Georgia Tech, Wenzel joined the ACC Network's Nothing But Net set. The cast included former Virginia Tech legend Elizabeth Kitley, a former teammate of Wenzel's. She was asked about what she learned from playing with Kitley. Her answer was priceless.
Carliegh Wenzel gives a great quote about playing with Elizabeth Kitley at Virginia Tech
Wenzel got to play with and watch the greatest women's basketball player to play at Virginia Tech. What did she learn? What she learned was that Kitley is the true mark of what a teammate is.
"She was so good and it let everybody else be great around her,'' said Wenzel.
If that doesn't sum up Liz Kitley's time at Virginia Tech, I don't know what will. Along with Georgia Amoore, they put Blacksburg on the map for women's basketball and included their teammates with everything they did. They were great mentors and leaders. Now, Wenzel and Carys Baker are doing that and following in the footsteps with what they've learned watching their former teammates.
