During his tenure at Virginia Tech for three years, Hokies football coach Brent Pry has struggled in one-score games. I know, we're not breaking any news here with that; however, facing a pivotal Year 4 in Blacksburg, ending up on the other end of one-score games is a priority this fall.
Last season was never more evident, as if you reversed the one-score games, the Hokies would have been an 11-1 team. Now that seems like a little much and asking a lot, but if we're being honest, just two or three reverse results in those one-score games and the outcome of the season and the future of the program is totally different from what it is currently.
There are a number of areas that Virginia Tech needs to work on this fall camp, and they are making an effort to flip the one-score results in 2025.
"There's some intentional things and some things just decision-making,'' said Pry. "The mental and physical toughness of our team. Who's in decision-making. Who has the perspective to help make those decisions? We're diving into situational football more than we ever have."
Virginia Tech diving into situational football in camp is a must
Let's be honest, if Virginia Tech can improve in this area this season, then they are going to have the type of season they want to have. There are a number of areas they need to fix and work on, but having first-year offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery on staff is only going to help.
He comes to Blacksburg with head coaching experience, and that alone should have Pry bounce ideas off of him. Analytics is becoming a big part of sports, and I'm sure that as they are doing their deep dives into this that analytics will come in at some point, but again, reversing some of the one-score losses this season will go a long way in having the season that Pry and the program need to have.
