Three years into his tenure as football coach at Virginia Tech, Brent Pry is 16-21. He has brought the Hokies to a pair of bowl games the last two seasons, but he has struggled mightily in one-score games, something he addressed at the ACC Kickoff on Thursday in Charlotte.

Last season was supposed to be the year that Virginia Tech took a giant step under Pry after a ton of retention and Transfer Portal additions had them set up for a season that was going to be at least eight or nine wins. Heck, some college football analyst tabbed the Hokies as a dark horse for the new 12-team College Football Playoff.

After the season ended, there was a lot of roster turnover for Virginia Tech between the Transfer Portal and the NFL Draft, and the changes and turnover also hit the coaching staff. Now, with a roster that has a lot more questions than answers as they enter a new year, Pry dropped a rather bold statement about his 2025 squad.

Pry met with the media in Charlotte and touched on a number of different subjects, and had a take that opened some eyes about the upcoming season.

"This team is the closest to what I have for my vision of Virginia Tech football,'' said Pry.

When Pry took over for Justin Fuente, it was clear he had a vision for Virginia Tech football, but he has yet to reach that vision, according to him, until potentially this year. After all the turnover that they have undergone, that's a pretty bold statement. A new year brings new hope every year, but with expectations not as high as they were at this time last year, which may not be a bad thing. Sometimes, when expectations are not at their highest, is when teams can surprise.
