Breaking down Virginia Tech men's basketball pitiful loss to BC by the ugly numbers

These numbers were embarrassing, to say the least for a college basketball team.

When you thought the Virginia Tech men's basketball team had finally hit rock-bottom in 2024-25, they one-up themselves. However, what happened at Conte Forum on Tuesday night against Boston College will likely never be topped not only this year but for a long time.

The Eagles entered the game, 2-12, in the ACC and tied for Miami for last place. Unless they turn things around very quickly, they will miss the ACC Tournament next month, but if that happens, they enjoyed one night at the expense of the Hokies.

Virginia Tech was held to 36 points throughout the game, yes that's correct, 36 points over 40 minutes. The sad part was, until the second half, Boston College wasn't much better in terms of shooting, they just took care of the ball better, forced Virginia Tech into difficult shots, and rolled to a, 54-36, win for their third conference win of the season. How bad was it for Mike Young and his team? Consider the numbers.

Breaking down Virginia Tech men's loss to BC by the numbers

If you watched all 40 minutes, then you're a true Hokies fan as it was a tough watch for a game played in front of a small gathering of close family and friends. Here is a look at some of the unfathomable numbers.

  • Virginia Tech shot 29% from the field in the game, going 15-for-51.
  • Virginia Tech shot 16% from behind the arc, making just three of their 19 3-point attempts.
  • Usually a decent free-throw shooting team, the Hokies made just three of their eight attempts.
  • They had 17 turnovers compared to nine assists.
  • Virginia Tech led for 1:36 in the entire game.
  • It was the fewest points scored in an ACC game by Virginia Tech since only scoring 39 in February of 2020 against Virginia. In that game, the Cavaliers had the No. 1 ranked defense according to KenPom, while the Eagles Tuesday night were ranked 185th. Sheesh.

Looking at Boston College's stats, they're not going to blow you away, especially for a team that had lost 11 of their last 12 games heading into the late-night start.

  • Boston College shot 46% from the field, going 24-for-53. Most of their damage was done inside the paint with Chad Vanning scoring eight points inside in the first half and Donald Hand, Jr. finishing with 16.
  • BC wasn't much better from behind the arc, making three of their 18 attempts to finish at 17%.
  • The Eagles had 14 assists to 11 turnovers and they led for 35:57 of the game.

There were several factors for Virginia Tech's brutal performance and on the offensive end, they stood around on offense and failed to get the ball into the paint after a Mylyjael Poteat dunk early in the game. They chucked up contested 3-point attempts and not many, if any, were within the rhythm of the offense. When the Hokies are getting those looks, they shoot the ball better.

The only thing you can do is forget about this game and move on to Miami on Saturday night in South Florida. Another ACC basement team that the Hokies should be able to beat, but as we found out Tuesday night, nothing is easy for this team in 2024-25.
