Things have been quiet in terms of the transfer portal for the Virginia Tech men's basketball team in terms of commitments. Six players have entered the portal for head coach Mike Young, who is expected to add some players through the portal with a bigger NIL package.

The good news for the Hokies and Young is that Jaden Schutt, Tyler Johnson, and Ben Hammond have all announced that they are coming back for the 2025-26 season. Virginia Tech does have one portal commitment so far, when West Virginia's Amani Hansberry committed last Saturday night during the Final Four.

If you're looking for a positional need for Young for next season, it's a lengthy one. Guards, wings, forward, centers, you name it, they need it. Guards seem to have been a focal point early in the portal for Young in terms of reaching out to players. Another name has emerged for Virginia Tech in terms of an experienced guard in the portal who they have interest in.

Virginia Tech men's basketball has reached out to a Bowling Green combo transfer guard

An interesting portal guard who has got some interest already is Bowling Green's Derrick Butler, who has heard from the Hokies, VCU, Mississippi State, and others. The combo guard averaged 13.2 points and 3.5 rebounds a game for the Falcons this season, but there were nights when the North Carolina native filled up the stat sheet.

He dropped 35 points against Morgan State in November. He scored 20 or more points four times and hit double figures in 21 of Bowling Green's 31 games. He would have one year of eligibility left, as he plans on taking advantage of an extra JUCO year in 2025-26.

He has spent a couple of years in the MAC after playing the 2023-24 season with Central Michigan, but he is a player who could make the seamless transition to a power conference program. Virginia Tech has been in on a number of guards and one thing that is for sure, Young is leaving no stones unturned during this portal cycle.
