Now that the calendar has flipped to the month of August, we will have Virginia Tech football this month. The Hokies and South Carolina will begin the season on Aug. 31 in Atlanta in what is going to be a fun season opener.

Shane Beamer will lead the Gamecocks against the Hokies and the program that his father built to become one of the top teams in the ACC and the country during his tenure in Blacksburg. What a statement this would be for Virginia Tech to pull an upset in this game to begin the season ahead of another battle with an SEC school at home six nights later against Vanderbilt.

Now that we have 28 days and four Sundays until Virginia Tech football, let's take a closer look at the No. 4 for the Hokies in 2025.

Running back is a position that head coach Brent Pry and offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery need to fill, as Bhayshul Tuten has moved on to the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Draft. The Hokies brought in transfers Terion Stewart, Marcellous Hawkins, and Braydon Bennett for this season. Incoming freshman Jeffrey Overton is expected to get some snaps and a chance to earn some playing time, but the Hokies also return P.J. Prioleau and Jeremiah Coney.

Coney, who will wear No. 4 this year, is a player who could push the new running backs and push for playing time. Last season at Syracuse in November, Tuten missed the game after suffering an injury the week before against Georgia Tech, and Coney rushed for 96 yards. He finished the season with 32 carries and 179 yards in 2024.

It'll be interesting to see how things play out at running back for Virginia Tech, but Coney is a player who could push for some carries in 2025. Regardless, we are just four Sundays away from the Hokies kicking off a new season.
