The Virginia Tech football team will enjoy their bye week this weekend, sitting at 6-2 after a road win last Saturday night at Clemson. The Hokies are 3-2 in ACC play, and they could easily be 5-0, but in order to make an appearance in the ACC Championship Game in early December in Charlotte, they have a lot of work to do and need some luck in other results across the league.

Four games remain for Virginia Tech in the 2026 campaign: at SMU, vs. Stanford, at Miami, and vs. Virginia. Not easy. There are eight ACC matchups on Saturday, and some big ones that could play a role in the Hokies' future in terms of the standings in James Franklin's first season in Blacksburg. As Virginia Tech sits on a bye, here are three teams that fans should be rooting for that would be in the best interest of Virginia Tech.

3 teams Virginia Tech fans should begrudgingly root for this weekend that could benefit the 2026 Hokies

Boston College

Over the years, the Hokies have owned the Eagles in terms of results on the field. That included a 21-14 come-from-behind win in a nor'easter in Chestnut Hill last month. As far as BC goes this weekend, the Eagles will visit Duke, which is the defending ACC champion. The Blue Devils have two losses already in conference play, and since Virginia Tech doesn't play Duke this year, they need all the help they can get when it comes to the Blue Devils.

Boston College does have a lot to play for themselves as they are 4-3 and knocking on the door of becoming bowl-eligible after a road win at Georgia Tech last weekend.

Florida State

Mike Norvell is in dire need of a win to save his job, going up against Dabo Swinney and Clemson at home. The Hokies beat the Tigers last week to hand Swinney his second ACC loss, but Virginia Tech has the harder remaining conference slate. They do own the tiebreaker with Clemson, but the Tigers are going to have to lose at least one more conference game, and this is a prime spot to have that happen: a struggling Clemson offense against a desperate FSU team.

Florida State gave Miami everything they could handle in South Florida a couple of weeks ago before falling in overtime. Let's see how they respond after a bye week following that loss.

Virginia

I know this isn't easy to admit, rooting for UVA, but in the overall big picture, Wake Forest and SMU are the hands-down favorites to get to Charlotte to likely play Miami. However, the Hokies visit the Mustangs next Friday night and control their fate in terms of the head-to-head matchup. As for the Cavaliers, they are a big underdog and dealing with a slew of injuries. Can they navigate all of that and take down the Demon Deacons in Winston-Salem?

Virginia is 4-4 after a magical 11-win 2025 season and needs a win for bowl eligibility.
