The Virginia Tech women's basketball team was looking to follow up its big win on Thursday night at Syracuse with a win at home over a struggling Boston College team on Sunday afternoon. On top of stringing a second straight win together, the Hokies were looking for some revenge after losing last season in Chestnut Hill, Mass., in a game that proved very costly when it came time for selection into the NCAA Tournament.

Boston College entered the game winless, and a loss by Megan Duffy's team would have been devastating, to say the least. Instead, the Hokies came out and set the tone early in blowing out the Eagles to improve to 13-5 overall and 3-3 in ACC play. Here are three takeaways from the program's 500th all-time win at Cassell Coliseum.

First quarter tone set by Virginia Tech

The Hokies set the tone in the first quarter with an 11-0 run on the Eagles, which gave them a 22-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Last season, Virginia Tech was the better team, but they let Boston College hang around, and it ended up costing them a brutal road loss. This year, they never let the Eagles get within single digits the rest of the game and pulled away for the 22-point victory.

Virginia Tech's suffocating defense carried over from Syracuse win

Virginia Tech's defensive pressure at Syracuse on Thursday night was impressive. If they could play that way each night, which I know is hard and difficult to do, they would be fine, but they again made things very difficult for BC and took advantage of it. They forced 19 Boston College turnovers, held them to just 14 field goals in the game.

Carys Baker leads the way offensively again

It was another game where Carys Baker led the Hokies' offense again. She tallied a game-high 17 points and made six of her 12 field goals. Carleigh Wenzel (three rebounds and four assists) and Mel Daley (six rebounds) each had 10 points.

Kilah Freelon had nine points, but it was another impressive game off the bench for Samyha Suffren with nine points and four rebounds. Kayl Petersen missed the game after suffering an injury against the Orange on Thursday night.
