Over the last week, the number of Virginia Tech football players entering the transfer portal has slowly risen, which should not surprise anyone. On Wednesday afternoon, offensive lineman Johnny Dickson announced he was entering the portal.

Dickson is a redshirt freshman and he becomes the fifth Hokie to go to the portal, joining tight end Dae’Quan Wright, running back Bryce Duke, cornerback Derrick Canteen, and wide receiver Da’Wain Lofton.

Johnny Dickson has three years of eligibility remaining

Dickson will have three years of eligibility remaining after this season and like most of the other Hokies who are entering the portal, he will remain with the team through the Military Bowl on Dec. 27 against Tulane in Annapolis, Maryland, which seems like an odd decision.

Regardless, Dickson played in nine games this past season, all in reserve, and a lot of times he came in when the game was well decided as a lot of the Hokies games were, especially in ACC play where they went 5-3.

Dickoson’s departure is one of the many reasons why second-year head coach Brent Pry and his staff have been focusing on offensive linemen in the transfer portal. There were games this season where you could tell that the offensive line was outplayed and it was evident that they need to add some big boys for 2024.
