The Virginia Tech football team hosts Wake Forest on Saturday for Homecoming at Lane Stadium. In terms of record-wise, it’s a big game for the Hokies heading into their bye week. At 2-4, a third win would go a long way toward having the final five games be big in terms of trying to become Bowl-eligible.

It’s also a big weekend not only because it’s Homecoming, but also because the Hokies will also be hosting several recruits, some who have committed to Blacksburg and some who have not made a decision yet.

If there is one thing that second-year coach Brent Pry needs to do, it’s start hitting it big in the recruiting trail. Last offseason, he hit the transfer portal hard and it’s made a big impact through the first six games of the season, but recruiting is vital for Pry and his staff if they are to excel in the rebuilding process, something that won’t sit well with the fanbase it if takes a long time.

Friday night, kicker Connor McLaughlin committed to Virginia Tech and he has an impressive leg for a high school player.

In a game on Oct. 6, he had kickoffs of 70, 68, 68, 69 and 68 yards. A big foot is something that could be a game-changer for the Hokies, but it’s also clear that there is much more that needs to be added in terms of future recruits. The Hokies struggled with in-state recruiting before Pry and that is something that needs to change if things are going to turn around.

The recruiting game is vital in college football and along with additions from the transfer portal, it can be a program-changer. That is something that Pry is going to need to do if things are going to turn around sooner rather than later in Blacksburg.
