Virginia Tech Football: What we’ve learned through the first four weeks
By Scott Roche
Virginia Tech has struggled running the football
The running game has been, well, not good for the Hokies through the first four weeks. Their best game on the ground was against Marshall last weekend, but for some reason, they abandoned the running game.
On the game’s opening drive, Virginia Tech drove 75 yards, 62 on the ground, to take a 7-0 lead when quarterback Kyron Drones scored on a 31-yard run. Running back and North Carolina A&T transfer Bhayshul Tuten struggled through the first three weeks running it, rushing for 88 yards against the Thundering Hurd on nine carries with his longest run being 49 yards.
In the other three games, they rushed for just 109 yards against Old Dominion, and 11 against Purdue, with them only finishing with plus-yardage because of a Drones scramble on the game’s final drive for 13 yards. Against Rutgers, they rushed for 129 yards, but 74 of that was from Drones.
The offense was moving best against Marshall when they had success running the ball. They need to get back to that.
