Virginia Tech fans are already calling for Brent Pry to make a change
By Scott Roche
Well, this didn’t take long.
As the second half went on Saturday night during Virginia Tech’s 24-17 loss to Purdue, one thing was becoming clear, fans were clearly concerned about the quarterback position.
Grant Wells struggled to hit receivers, he was taking hits from Boilermakers’ defenders and threw a pair of interceptions in the game. He threw for 243 yards, but he was less effective than last week against Old Dominion by going just 16-for-33. Yes, he lost his top receivers to injuries, however, coach Brent Pry decided to stick with his senior, and Hokies’ fans are all set with Wells moving forward.
Virginia Tech fans calling for Kyron Drones to replace Wells
As the offense struggled in the second half, it didn’t take long for Virginia Tech fans to take to social media, X, to voice their frustration with Wells and wanting to see Baylor transfer Kyron Drones slide under center moving forward.

Pry put Drones in for the game’s final drive with the Hokies trailing 24-17. Starting at their own 9-yard line, the sophomore hit Dae’Quan Wright for 26 yards and a pass interference penalty moved the ball to the Virginia Tech 42. Drones then scrambled for 13 yards, a run that moved Tech from minus rushing yards to plus with less than two minutes to play in the game, and lowered his shoulder to pick up a first down in Purdue territory.
The drive stalled there as four incompletions turned the ball over on downs and the Boilermakers ran out the clock to even their record at 1-1 and drop the Hokies to the same record. To be fair, receivers Ali Jennings and Jaylin Lane were both injured and not available to Drones, but still, bringing him into the game earlier would have been the move to make for Pry. It didn’t happen until the last drive.
Who ends up under center next week at Rutgers remains to be seen, however, regardless of who is available for receivers and regardless of health, Hokies fans have spoken as to who they want to see under center in New Jersey.
