Predicting Virginia Tech’s 2023 football win-loss record
By Scott Roche
Predicting Virginia Tech’s first four games which are non-conference battles
Week 1: Sept. 2 vs. Old Dominion
If the Hokies are not up for revenge in their season-opener at home, then that would be a real shock. New wide receiver Ali Jennings changes sidelines coming to Tech after playing 2022 with Old Dominion and should bring a little insight with him as to what they might expect. Prediction: Win
Week 2: Sept. 9 vs. Purdue
The biggest early-season test for the Hokies is going to be Purdue out of the Big Ten. Like the ACC, the Big Ten is top-heavy, but the Boilermakers are not expected to finish in the top half. Scoring points is going to be key in this one as Purdue can struggle to score at times themselves, especially on the road. Prediction: Loss
Week 3: Sept. 16 at Rutgers
Speaking of the Big Ten, Tech’s first road game of the season is up to New Jersey to play Rutgers. Last season under Greg Schiano, the Scarlet Knights started the season off well at 3-0 but faltered down the stretch and missed out on a Bowl losing eight of their final nine games. If Virginia Tech is going to be Bowl-eligible, this is a must-win. Prediction: Win
Week 4: Sept. 23 at Marshall
`This is a winnable road game for the Hokies, but they can’t overlook the Thundering Hurd. Last season Marshall pulled off one of the biggest upsets early in the season with a 26-21 win at Notre Dame. Like Rutgers the week before, this is an almost must-win for Pry’s squad. Prediction: Win
