Here’s how we’re betting tonight’s big game:

Virginia Tech vs Virginia Prediction

Whew, Virginia Tech is rolling. They’ve won five in a row and covered the spread in four of those five behind the 13th-highest adjusted offensive efficiency in the country. Virginia won the first matchup 54-52, but with the 2nd-best 3-point shooting percentage in America, the Hokies are always a threat to catch fire and leave their opponent in the dust.

The Cavaliers have won and covered four in a row, including a statement win over Duke. They’re a balanced team with the 61st-ranked offense and 82nd-ranked defense, per Bart Torvik, but they don’t do any one thing incredibly well. Their 3-point defense ranks just 226th nationally, so if Virginia Tech can get a few shots to go down early then the Cavaliers may be in trouble.

I think this will be another nail-biter between two of the hottest teams in college basketball. The Hokies are 9-3 at home this season and 8-4 against the spread (ATS), but Virginia has shown they can go into enemy territory unscathed with their victory over Duke. Both teams protect the ball well and don’t allow their opponent to shoot many free throws, so this matchup will come down to who can hit shots.

Four points is a lot to cover in a rivalry game against a hot opponent, so I’m staying off the spread. Instead, I’ll look to the total for value.

The over is 6-2 in Virginia Tech’s last eight games and 6-1 in Virginia’s last seven road games. I think oddsmakers are putting too much stock into their first matchup and not enough in how these teams have played recently. Virginia’s offense has been better of late and they can exploit Virginia Tech’s defense while the Hokies will have plenty of looks from beyond the arc to push the total over.

Give me the over 118.5 (-110) as the over improves to 7-2 in Tech’s last nine.
