We’ve finally made it to the return of Virginia Tech football. It’s been what has felt like a ridiculously long offseason but we made it.

The opener against North Carolina is a big one for many reasons. It marks the return of a sellout crowd to Lane Stadium, a massive conference matchup, and the chance for the Hokies to prove quickly that last season wasn’t who they are.

We take a look at the series history with the Tar Heels and the most recent matchups.

Series History

These two teams have been meeting since 1895 and the Hokies are 24-13-6 against the Tar Heels. Virginia Tech has a 6-4 record at home against UNC.

In the last 11 matchups between these two teams, the Hokies have only lost three times. Only one of those three losses was in Blacksburg. That loss was in 2015 when the Tar Heels squeaked out a 30-27 victory.

Last Meeting

Last year’s matchup against UNC is one that Hokie fans might want to forget. UNC picked up a 56-45 win in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels got off to a fast start scoring 21 in the first quarter, putting the Hokies in a hole they couldn’t quite climb out of. UNC also had 399 yards on the ground in that one.

The Virginia Tech defense just wasn’t able to stop the UNC offense in that one. They didn’t have an answer for the running game or the Carolina receivers. It will be a revamped defense this season for Virginia Tech football against some new faces for UNC so the matchup will be an interesting one to keep an eye on.

Last Home Meeting

The last home matchup between these two went down into the history books. It was the crazy 6 OT 43-41 win for the Hokies in 2019. It was a back and forth affair with both teams finding success on the offensive side of the ball. The Hokies came away with the win after successfully converting the 2 point conversion in the sixth overtime period. If Lane Stadium is as excited as they were in that one, then the Tar Heels could be in trouble.

These two teams battle when they go up against each other and the Hokies are going to have to play at their best to get by No. 10 North Carolina.
