Report: Football Assistants receive two-year contract extensions
According to the Roanoke Times, it is not just Justin Fuente who received a contract extension in the off-season
After the Belk Bowl last December, Virginia Tech announced that the contract of head football coach Justin Fuente extended for two seasons, which included a pay raise for the first year head coach of the Hokies.
At the time, Fuente expressed gratitude to the administration, and hinted that himself and his coaching staff were being well taken care of despite only one year on campus in Blacksburg.
His comments about his staff being well taken care of now make much more sense, as many of Fuente’s assistants were given two-year contract extensions as well, according to a report from Andy Bitter of the Roanoke Times.
Per the report, eight assistants in total had their letters of appointment extended by two years, but none of those eight coaches received a pay raise. Offensive coordinator Brad Cornelson and special teams coordinator James Shibest have contracts that now run through the 2020 season, while the six other assistants have deals that expire in June of 2019.
The lone assistant whose contract expires prior to 2019 is strength and conditioning coach Ben Hilgart, who has a deal running through June of 2018, according to Bitter.

Bud Foster was not included in the eight assistants who received an extension, as he already had a formal contract, not a letter of appointment, that ran through June of 2019. Foster received a $25,000 pay raise at the beginning of the calendar year, and will make $950,000 in 2017. The $950,000 salary is second only to Justin Fuente, who will receive a $3.25 million base salary this season.
As for the other higher paid coaches on the staff, offensive coordinator Brad Cornelson will make $450,000, special teams coordinator James Shibest will make $420,000, and safeties coach Galen Scott will make $308,000.
After Scott, there is a group of coaches making a base salary of $260,000 in 2017. These coaches include cornerbacks coach Brian Mitchell, offensive line coach Vance Vice, wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins, and long-time defensive line coach Charley Wiles. To round out the salaries of the coaching staff, running backs coach Zohn Burden will make $200,000, and strength and conditioning coach Ben Hilgart will make $190,000.
