A major emphasis for Justin Fuente and his coaching staff has been adding experienced players via transfer. On Thursday afternoon, they landed another offensive playmaker from Ball State University.

The Virginia Tech Hokies football program gained a commitment from transfer wide receiver Damon Hazelton Jr. of Ball State University on Thursday afternoon, according to his personal Twitter account.

Hazelton Jr., a rising sophomore, caught 51 passes for 505 yards and four touchdowns last season as a true freshman for the Cardinals. Due to NCAA transfer rules, Hazelton Jr. will sit out the 2017 season, and will eligible to play in 2018. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

For Hazelton Jr., the transfer to Virginia Tech makes perfect sense. When he is eligible to play in 2018, the Hokies will be extremely young at the wide receiver position, and Hazelton Jr. will be one of the most experienced players on the outside, no matter how many young players end up in the rotation this upcoming season.

As a player who finished second on his team in receptions last season, Hazelton Jr. has already proven that he can become a reliable playmaker at the FBS level.

What is even more impressive is that Hazelton Jr. was recruited as a running back prior to changing his position at Ball State, and last year was his first full season of his football career as a wide receiver.

The future is undeniably bright for the Virginia Tech offense, and Hazelton Jr. will be a name to watch as a pass catcher in 2018 and beyond.
