Virginia Tech has a wide open competition for the running back rotation heading into 2017, and freshman Jalen Holston hopes to figure into the mix

The Virginia Tech Hokies’ running game struggled through an up-and-down 2016 campaign, and was the weakest part of what turned out to be a very formidable offense last season. While Travon McMillian returns as the team’s leading rusher heading into the fall, the Hokies will be seeking consistency alongside of him to round out their backfield.

One candidate who can make some noise for early playing time when he arrives on campus this summer is former 3-star recruit and true freshman running back, Jalen Holston. Holston, who signed with the Hokies in February as a member of the 2017 class, is a 5’11 200 lbs. running back out of Stockbridge, Georgia.

He’s a hard-nosed runner with great breakaway speed who could provide the offense with a true home run threat as soon as this upcoming season. Holston already has the size to play running back at the next level, so it will be a matter of fit in the offense and whether or not Holston picks up the playbook quickly enough to see early playing time next fall.

As we continue our look at some of the newest members of the Virginia Tech roster, Jalen Holston spoke with Mark Rogers to discuss his overall recruitment, why he chose the Hokies, and whether or not he believes he can fit into the running back mix right away in 2017.
