National Signing Day is not too far away now as the Hokies prepare to make the final push with their Class of 2015 commits and recruiting targets. It seems clear that Bryce Love and Shelton Johnson are two of the Hokies’ top uncommitted targets while Tennessee commit Darrell Taylor is also a top target.
However, the Hokies are now making a fairly strong pursuit for another player as they offered this player a scholarship today.
Virginia Tech offered a scholarship to three-star athlete Chris Williamson of Gainesville High School in Gainesville, Georgia. Williamson is a late riser that he received tons of offers recently including three today from the aforementioned Hokies, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky.
Williamson was at one point committed to UL-Monroe after being lightly recruited over the summer, but a strong senior season led to him decommitting from UL-Monroe. Williamson has also received offers within the last six weeks from California, North Carolina, Northwestern, Virginia, UCF, and other major programs.
Williamson is listed as a cornerback by Rivals and ESPN, but is listed as an athlete by 247 Sports though he is included in their cornerback rankings. The 247 Sports Composite lists Williamson as the 71st best cornerback and 86th best recruit in Georgia while Rivals has him only as a three-star recruit.

This is the time of the year where late risers like Chris Williamson will see major offer surges, and become intriguing players to watch. Official visits are usually the best way of telling who the frontrunners are, and North Carolina seems to be one of the frontrunners as they will receive an official visit on January 16th.
The Hokies are working hard to get Williamson to take an official visit to Blacksburg as it is clear that Williamson is one of Virginia Tech’s top remaining targets. There is definitely a lot of uncertainty surrounding the recruitment of Williamson mainly due to the fact that he has received so many offers within the last 6 weeks.
One thing that should help the Hokies is the reputation of Virginia Tech as “DBU” with DB Coach Torrian Gray being the best defensive backs coach in the business. Gray has been able to do that a lot of the time with under the radar guys and Williamson fits that bill with his late surge up recruiting boards.
Chris Williamson had an impressive senior season, and would be a solid addition to the Virginia Tech football program. Right now though, the recruiting battle for Williamson is wide open with North Carolina looking like a top contender due to already having an official visit scheduled.
