The Virginia Tech Hokies will be looking to avoid their first losing season since 1992 as they take on the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Military Bowl in three days. The Hokies arrived in Washington D.C. yesterday, and will stay in the Nation’s Capital before making the trip to Annapolis, Maryland for the bowl game on gameday.
The Bearcats are not an easy matchup with their 9-3 record but this should be a game where Michael Brewer shines.
Cincinnati is 111th in the nation in average passing yards allowed per game as the Bearcats give up an average of 266.3 yards per game through the air. Opposing quarterbacks have also completed 60.8% of their passes against the Bearcats this season.
The Bearcats only gave up 20 points or less five times this season in games against SMU, South Florida, Tulane, Connecticut, and Temple. Temple is the only one of those five teams that is going to a bowl game, and the Owls only won 6 games this season with 4 of those coming in American Athletic conference games.
With all this said, there is almost no reason why Michael Brewer shouldn’t have a great game against Cincinnati. If he struggles early, it would not surprise me if the Hokies make a very quick change to Brenden Motley.

However, Brewer should be ready for the chance to prove that he can lead the Hokies to a Military Bowl victory and a lot more success next season. Brewer has been inconsistent in many games depending on the drive though some of that has to do with the play calling of Scot Loeffler.
However, I expect that Loeffler will look to be aggressive with his play calling in this game and Brewer will have more opportunities to push the ball down the field. The question is can Brewer be consistent on every drive and not just a few drives. Of course, that has worked for the Hokies in some games, but Cincinnati is a tougher opponent than Virginia.
Michael Brewer showed at the end of the game against UVA that he has the talent to be the type of guy that can put up a big game, but he just needs to be more consistent. That has kind of been the story of Brewer’s season beginning with Virginia Tech’s loss at home against East Carolina.
Cincinnati is not a great pass rushing team either so Brewer should have more time to throw the football in this game. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Bearcats try to blitz more in this game to try to force Brewer to make some bad passes in this game.

The Hokies should have some matchup nightmares especially with the dangerous tight end duo of Bucky Hodges and Ryan Malleck who has flown under the radar with the tremendous rise of Hodges. Hodges has been playing better every single week and it will be up to Brewer to take advantage of the mismatch that he provides for the Hokies in this game.
This is a game where Michael Brewer should shine, and it is up to the redshirt junior quarterback to do that against the Cincinnati Bearcats.
