4. DE Shelton Johnson

Shelton Johnson is a defensive end from Atlantic Community High School in Delray Beach, Florida that received a four-star grade from 247 Sports recently though ESPN, Rivals, and the 247 Sports Composite rankings still have him as a three-star recruit.

Johnson is ranked as the 33rd best weak-side defensive end by Rivals, 33rd best overall defensive end by ESPN, and 13th best strong-side defensive end by the 247 Sports Composite. Johnson is ranked as Florida 49th best recruit by the 247 Sports Composite, 36th best by 247 Sports’ traditional rankings, and 73rd best by ESPN.

The Hokies received an official visit from Johnson on December 12th, and have gained a lot of momentum to erase much of the gap that existed after the loss of Josh Sweat to Florida State. Johnson is definitely Virginia Tech’s top uncommitted defensive end target, and that has seemed to make an impact on gaining momentum for Johnson.

Miami is also scheduled to receive an official visit from Johnson on January 23rd, and has made a surge into being one of the top contenders. Florida State is the favorite still, but the commitment of Josh Sweat may actually end up hurting the Seminoles’ chances of getting Johnson.

Virginia Tech is making a big push to once again poach a Florida recruit late in the process, and the Hokies might once again be successful in doing that.
