Enter Sandman
Those two words symbolize one of the greatest traditions and the greatest entrance in all of college football. After the famous “Lets Go Hokies” chants, the players are in the tunnel and absolute chaos ensues with fans jumping, screaming, and going crazy with Metallica’s Enter Sandman blaring in the background.
There is nothing like the chills that go through you when you are jumping and yelling to Enter Sandman, ready to cheer for your Hokies when they enter the field at the first climax of the song. There is nothing like that moment when Hokie Nation goes crazy and special moments happen including earthquakes caused by fans jumping up and down, and screaming at Lane Stadium.
It is special when the Hokies take the field and it all started back in 2000. Here’s a look at how the Hokies’ athletic department almost went with something else from Virginia Tech.
"When Virginia Tech added a fancy new scoreboard to Lane Stadium ahead of the 2000 season, the athletics marketing team decided to use the scoreboard for an entrance video. The group considered “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns N’ Roses and “Sirius” by the Alan Parsons Project before settling on Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.”"
Yes, the Hokies’ athletic department almost did not go with Enter Sandman but that decision has paid off and become one of the most famous traditions in college football. This has led to plenty of famous Virginia Tech football moments including this YouTube video from the last time Miami came to Blacksburg.
This might be the signature Enter Sandman moment with Mike Patrick making some famous comments to the insane seen that caused a small earthquake. Hokie Nation loves Virginia Tech football and will be there no matter what happens in the season.
No matter the opponent, the fans always goes crazy when Enter Sandman starts playing. Tomorrow night, college football fans all across the country will get the chance to see the crazy seen of fans jumping to Enter Sandman before cheering as the Hokies take the field to face the Hurricanes in primetime.
This game is the moment this season where Virginia Tech fans will be in the spotlight and for those who don’t much about Hokie Nation, then you are in for a crazy ride starting with the chaos and absolute awesomeness of the “Lets Go Hokies” chants echoing through Lane Stadium and many fans all around the stadium including every student in the North End Zone jumping to Enter Sandman.
The legacy of Enter Sandman and Virginia Tech football will once again grow a little more tonight and it’s all because of a decision made 15 years ago to add Enter Sandman as an intro song with the addition of a new scoreboard.
