The Virginia Tech Hokies’ offensive line has been a mess so far over the course of the 2014 season and Virginia Tech finally decided to make a change this week. Redshirt freshman Wyatt Teller will make his first start at left guard on Thursday while sixth year senior David Wang is now at center and senior Caleb Farris is out of the lineup completely.
Farris struggled at center and the Hokies definitely are hoping that Wang can be at least as good as he was last year at center with Virginia Tech when Wang was an All-ACC Honorable Mention. However, the move of Teller to the starting lineup proves that Stacy Searels and the Hokies are willing to make changes for the improvement of the team.
This makes you wonder about Wang as if he struggles, the Hokies might take another senior out of the lineup and replace him with freshman center Eric Gallo.
Gallo is currently listed on the Hokies’ depth chart as the backup center instead of Caleb Farris who is currently the backup at right guard behind redshirt sophomore Augie Conte. The fact that Farris is Conte’s backup and not Wang’s could be a sign that Gallo is the next guy up if Wang is not able to be an upgrade for the Hokies compared to what Farris was able to do.
Wang’s experience at center should make him an upgrade over Farris while the size and strength of Wyatt Teller should be an improvement at left guard over what Wang was previously providing there. However, Gallo is the center of the future for the Hokies and Stacy Searels should be ready to give the freshman a chance if Wang is unable to get the job done for the Hokies.
Eric Gallo is the center of the future but his first chance to start could come before 2015 if David Wang struggles.
