Buzz Williams has been building his coaching staff and those who will help him run the basketball program. Today, there was an announcement made about the specifics of the staff with many of the people having worked with Williams at Marquette including Isaac Chew who will be taking the job as top assistant for Williams. However, there was one fairly well-known assistant that is joining Virginia Tech from other than Marquette
Steve Roccaforte might not be a very well-known coach but the former head coach at Lamar University has a very good track record within the industry. Roccaforte is a very experienced coach that has also been an assistant at some major programs including South Florida and Memphis while also working with very good coaches like John Calipari.
One thing Steve Roccaforte is seen as is an ace recruiter who was a big boost in helping to start build Memphis with John Calipari. While at Lamar as an assistant and then as a head coach, Roccaforte was able to recruit better than you would expect for the program and that was where he really solidfied his reputation as a great recruiter. Now, the Hokies have someone who can be another ace recruiter on a very strong staff in terms of recruiting.
Steve Roccaforte had moderate success at Lamar as a head coach with a record of 76-78 which wasn’t great but was not as bad as it could have been. Roccaforte might not have been able to have much success as a head coach but he is a high energy assistant that knows how to be one of the top coaches on the bench to assist the head coach. Roccaforte is a very good addition as Buzz Williams has built a very stron staff to start the basketball rebuild in Blacksburg.
