Wide receiver Kevin Asante seemed like a player that could make an impact for the Hokies during the 2013 season. Asane was second on the depth chart at the flanker position and seemed like a guy that would likely get some playing time behind receivers like Demitri Knowles. A lot of the hype surroudning Asante was due to the fact that he appeared in 10 games and made 1 start as a redshirt freshman.
Then, the Hokies announced that Kevin Asante had left the program in July for an undisclosed reason. Asante would go on to end up testifying in the court case of former Virginia Tech running back Michael Holmes in which Holmes would be sentenced to two years in jail for burglary. However, Kevin Asante has worked his way back into the fold at Virginia Tech and news broke yesterday about him returning via multiple sources including Andy Bitter of the Roanoke Times in this tweet.
Kevin Asante will now face an uphill climb to gain playing time as he will likely be fourth on the depth chart at the flanker position. Asante has shown in the past that he has some talent and could be a contributor in Blacksburg but this is going to extremely tough for him to gain that playing time. Asante will get his opportunities but if he doesn’t get much playing time this year, don’t be surprised if he transfers elsewhere to get more playing time.
