Cam Phillips Wins Belk Bowl MVP
Junior Cam Phillips wins Belk Bowl MVP behind strong offensive effort
After a strong offensive effort, Virginia Tech junior wide receiver Cam Phillips captured Belk Bowl MVP honors in his team’s 35-24 victory over Arkansas.
Arkansas jumped out early to a 24-0 lead in this one, with Phillips being the lone offensive bright spot for a Virginia Tech passing game that had trouble getting untracked early in the first half.
From the blowout to getting themselves right back into the game, Phillips was solid through it all, proving to be a pivotal target for Jerod Evans and the offense as the Hokies mounted their comeback, and ultimately, capturing the victory.
Phillips finished the game with six receptions for 115 yards, including an important 38-yard reception in the second half to help set up one of his team’s five second half scoring drives to get the Hokies back in it.
The strong Belk Bowl performance caps off an impressive junior season for Phillips, who finished the season with 76 catches for 983 yards and five touchdowns. It was Phillips’ best season yet in Blacksburg, and he will likely be relied upon in an even greater capacity moving forward with Bucky Hodges moving on to the NFL next season and Isaiah Ford considering doing the same.
The Belk Bowl MVP performance should springboard the soon-to-be-senior nicely heading into 2017-18, where he will be one of the top receivers on the roster no matter what Isaiah Ford chooses to do.
All of us at Fighting Gobbler congratulate Phillips on his play, and the Hokies on their third consecutive bowl victory.
