Hokies to host four-star safety target Devon Hunter on an official visit this weekend

Indian River High School safety Devon Hunter, who has long been sought after by the Virginia Tech football coaching staff as the top prize for the Class of 2017, will be taking his official visit to Blacksburg this weekend.

The Chesapeake, Virginia product is a consensus four-star recruit by Scout, Rivals, 247 Sports, and ESPN, and is considered to be one of the top recruits in the country at the safety position.

Hunter has received serious interest from Auburn, Alabama, Clemson, and North Carolina among others, although the Hokies have emerged as the team to beat for Hunter’s commitment in recent weeks.

Initially, Hunter planned to announce his commitment on Christmas Eve, but reconsidered and has stated via Twitter that he will not announce his decision until after the New Year.

Virginia Tech’s running backs coach Zohn Burden is the recruiter for Hunter, and he is looking to continue his momentum as one of the top recruiters on the staff, having just pulled in Stockbridge, Georgia running back Jalen Holston on Thursday evening as the latest commitment to the 2017 class.

If Burden can help land Devon Hunter, there will be little doubt that he has emerged as one of the top recruiters in the ACC.

If Hunter commits to the Hokies, he would join the recruiting class as only the second true safety, along with Devante Smith, who committed to Virginia Tech back in July.
